Abortion is a practice as old as man it self. It is method of birth control in which conception
is terminated rather than prevented.
In early Philippine society, women became pregnant by accedent had to drink a
bitter solution. Other sought the help of a local hilot to massage the pregnant woman's abdomen
to induce abortion. These practice are still common among the poor on both rural and urban areas.
According to Doctor Andre E. Hellegres, "abortion is defined as terminition of pregnancy spontaneously
or by induction, prior to viability. Termination of pregnancy is called delivery."
Effects of Abortion
It is interesting to note, however, that there are physical and psychologycal effects of abortion
in woman concerned. The physical effect, for instance, include habitual mis carriages, ectopicnpregnancies, menstrual
disturbances or discomfort, stillbirth, bleeding shock, coma, perforated uterus, fever, cold sweat, intense pain,
loss of other organs, insomnia, loss of appetite, wiegh loss and frigidy. Among the psychological effects are guilt,
suicidal tendencies, loss of sense of fulfillment and mouring.
